Each player leads an expedition across the United States. The goal is to be the first to reach the West Coast. Lewis & Clark is therefore a race game where only first place counts. Each player holds Character cards that form their expedition. These characters allow players to perform actions such as gathering resources, moving along the path, or asking for help from the Native Americans. To be activated, the action corresponding to a card must be associated with a Force provided either by another card or by Native Americans. In each turn, a player must perform an action. They can also recruit a new Character and improve their hand of cards. Finally, regularly, players can establish their Camp to pick up cards already played. But the loading of resources and the number of Native Americans hosted can potentially cause them to lose hard-won progress. The management of resources and Native Americans is therefore crucial in the game. The game ends immediately as soon as a player has brought their Camp to or beyond Fort Clatsop.
