HI MI KI is a game of observation, reflection, and strategy in which each player embodies a shadow Yamabushi. These mysterious and powerful corrupt sorcerers, in their tireless quest for power, relentlessly confront each other by making their elemental Yokai fight, monstrous creatures from the underworld well-known in Japanese folklore.
The originality of the gameplay lies in how players move their Yokai. Indeed, on their turn, a player must move one of their 3 cubes by pivoting it or by tilting it onto an adjacent square. When opposing cubes end up side by side, there is a conflict.
To resolve it, simply apply the principle of Shifumi (Rock-Paper-Scissors): Fire burns Wood, Wood floats on Water, and Water extinguishes Fire. If the player who just played possesses the dominant element, they win the conflict and score 1 point. Then it's the other player's turn.
Once the basic gameplay is mastered, explore the secret arcana by confronting Chaos in Expert mode in HI MI KI. This mode reveals the depth of the gameplay with the introduction of Chaos tiles such as teleportation, mirror, confusion, and major Yokai, offering new strategies to defeat your opponent and diversify the game experience.
The game HI KI MI also features a 2 vs 2 mode where each player has two cubes and can only play in the game zone assigned to them at the start of the game. For each team, if the first player chooses the Light zone, the second player must play in the Darkness zone. Thus, a Light player who moves their cube to the Darkness side cannot play it again until their partner returns it to their side of the board. It is therefore possible to exchange cubes between members of the same team during the game.
Finally, two solo modes are available: confront the Muk Yan (AI) or take on 60 challenges of varying difficulty.
