Hanafuda is a very old, traditional, and popular Japanese card game that has undergone several modern incarnations. The name Hanafuda does not refer to a single specific game; literally translated, it means "flower cards."
Many games have been created based on the iconography of the original Hanafuda, and although each game has its own distinct name, they are often collectively referred to under the generic label of Hanafuda.
Hanafuda cards are decorated with popular themes from Japanese culture, and although we have Europeanized the card format (traditionally, they are 37 x 56 mm tiles), our illustrations scrupulously adhere to the current standard. Nevertheless, we have taken the liberty of adding colorful pictograms to each card to guide beginner players in making their combinations.
A traditional Hanafuda deck has 48 cards divided into 12 suits (one for each month of the year). The four cards of each month are illustrated according to a theme inspired by nature and Japanese culture. Many of them refer to tales, customs, or anecdotes from Japanese history.
