Beyond the Sea of Mists slumbers the mysterious continent of Alula. A haven of peace that nature has elevated to a paragon of balance. Harmony and concord shape the contours of an ever-evolving island. The size and layout of its territories regularly change, making any attempt at mapping obsolete. The only way to tame this land is to traverse it again and again, to update its atlas. Explore this world of shifting geography and discover the wonders it holds. Meet its inhabitants, list its secrets, and gain more renown than your opponents.
In a game of Faraway, you will place 8 cards in front of you, turn by turn, from left to right, to form a tableau. This tableau symbolizes your exploration of the continent. Each card represents a Region, where you will discover the island's wonders and meet its inhabitants. They will ask you to explore the island for them, in search of specific resources. Thus, each card requires you to fulfill conditions to earn victory points.
Throughout the game, your cards will serve both to set new objectives and to fulfill those you have already played.
Each turn, you choose which regions to explore from your hand of 3. Then you replenish your hand from the card river. Since Faraway is played simultaneously, a clever priority system further emphasizes the importance of your decisions. Because choosing last leaves you with fewer options, reducing your possibilities in subsequent turns.
At the end of the game, during your return journey, each inhabitant whose mission you have fulfilled will earn you renown. This calculation is done from right to left, in the reverse order of placement. The player with the most renown wins.
