The objective of checkers is to capture all of your opponent's pieces or to put them in a position where they can no longer move. Checkers is played on a square board divided into 100 equal squares, alternately light and dark. It is played on the dark squares of the board (i.e., 50 active squares). The board must be placed so that the first square on the left, for each player, is a dark square. Checkers is played with 20 white (light) pieces and 20 black (dark) pieces. Before starting a game, the 20 black pieces and the 20 white pieces are arranged on the first 4 rows for each player.
