Each turn, you recruit just one character to add to your tableau, but this very simple action involves a great many important decisions: you must manage your Keys to influence the Messenger pawn at opportune moments, as it determines which characters can be recruited; manage your gold hoard to pay the cost of the characters you are interested in throughout the game; choose your characters carefully to optimize both the effect they trigger upon purchase and the points they will earn you at the end of the game; finally, place these characters judiciously in your 3 by 3 tableau to get the most out of them.
